Nat 'King' Cole
Nat 'King' Cole Nat-greatesthits-l
One of the most popular American singers of the 1940s and 50s, with a wonderful, smooth vocal style. A pioneering black entertainer in jazz and pop. His career was often blighted by racism and by the demands of commercial music making.

"I'm a musician at heart, I know I'm not really a singer. I couldn't compete with real singers. But I sing because the public buys it... "

NAT 'KING' COLE IN ONE MINUTE
Grew up in Chicago, one of five children who all became musicians
He was a brilliant jazz pianist, with his own innovative piano/guitar/bass group
Biggest hits included "Mona Lisa" and "Unforgettable"
In 1956 became the first black singer to have his own television show
His career slumped in the late fifties, before coming back with middle of the road material like "Ramblin' Rose"
Battled with alcoholism, and died of lung cancer
Thanks to multi-tracking, had a posthumous hit with his daughter Natalie in 1991
